Ricardo Maffei was born in Santiago, Chile on March 1, 1953. He studied at the Miguel Venegas Cifuentes Academy of Painting.
In 1978 he leaves Chile and moves to Madrid where he lives until 1988. He travels frequently to Tangier, Morocco, where he works and studies with Claudio Bravo. In 1987 he made his first solo exhibition at the Galeria Egam, Madrid.
In 1988 he returned to Chile. In 2000 he made his first exhibition at the Marlborough Gallery in New York, where he now exhibits regularly. His work has been exhibited individually and collectively in New York, Madrid, Miami, Montecarlo, El Salvador, Paris, Dubai, Buenos Aires and Santiago. Specialist criticism considers him the most important living realistic Chilean artist.
